Your Human Rights Reading List: One Book, One Community in East Lansing

Looking for some summer reading?  Follow the lead of the City of East Lansing and Michigan State University.  Their One Book, One Community (OBOC) program brings residents of the town and university together to discuss a common theme.  This year’s theme is “A Conversation on Justice, Human Rights and Compassion,” and the selections are:  Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, by attorney and author Bryan StevensonThe House I Live In, a documentary film by Eugene Jarecki.  The OBOC organizers note that both selections “have been instrumental in raising the nation’s consciousness of how institutionalized bias and punitive legislation have denied the rights of many Americans and tarnished human rights in the United States.”

Several events are scheduled for August and September to bring the community together to discuss these works, including a visit from Bryan Stevenson.  More information about this inspiring and ambitious local human rights education program is available here.
