Local Goes Global: Cities for CEDAW Visits Geneva
On November 13, representatives of Cities for CEDAW, the nationwide movement to expand local CEDAW implementation in the United States, presented their work before the UN CEDAW Committee. Soon-Young Yoon, who represented Cities for CEDAW to the Committee reported that: “My favorite comments from CEDAW experts were: ‘This seems to be a model’ (Patricia Schultz, Switzerland); ‘How can we extend this initiative?’ (Nicole Ameline, France); and ‘I want to make this happen at my university’ (Silvia Pimentel, Brazil).”
Meanwhile, Cities for CEDAW continues its work on the home front. On December 7, the Pittsburgh Human Rights City Alliance will sponsor a kick-off for Pittsburgh’s own campaign to become a CEDAW City. The event is part of the Human Rights Days of Action series leading up to Human Rights Day on December 10. Here are the details:
Monday December 7, 7:00 PM: Pittsburgh: No Limits for Women! A Look at the Cities for CEDAW Campaign (Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women), Frick Fine Arts Auditorium (Schenley Drive @ Schenley Plaza in Oakland). Cities for CEDAW kick-off lecture and discussion featuring June Zeitlin, a leading women’s rights organizer and advocate for legal protections for women.
Help spread the word, and check out Cities for CEDAW website for suggestions about how to bring CEDAW to your community! So many local governments have now adopted resolutions on the human right to be free of violence . . . perhaps CEDAW for Cities is a next step for those localities and for the law school clinics that have helped support the resolution campaign!
