In early December, Human Rights Watch, LatinoJustice, and the Center for Constitutional Rights, filed an amicus brief in City of South Miami v. DeSantis, a challenge to Florida state’s law barring local sanctuary jurisdictions. The case is pending in the Southern District of Florida, with plaintiffs represented by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The amicus brief addresses the human rights issues at stake, including the impacts on Florida immigrants’ ability to access local services, including law enforcement assistance, access to the justice system, and access to education. The brief also collects the many statements of international bodies concerning the rights of immigrants, both in general and in the U.S.
