What You Can Do To Encourage Voting

Image1As law professors we are in a privileged position to address a unique audience on the importance of voting.  Voting is fundamental to democracy and never before in our history has voting meant so much in determining whether democracy continues.

Here are some ways in which we can promoted voting:

Provide students with links to their jurisdiction’s deadline for applying for an absentee or other remote voting option. This website is a start.

Encourage students to become involved in registering others to vote

For those mailing in ballots  requiring postage, donate stamps to the elderly and others who may not be able to afford stamps.  Work with community organizations who can identify people in need.

Work with community organization to identify those who might need assistance in completing and or mailing remote voting requests.  Or those who need a ride to the polls.

Offer students training to be observers at polling places.

Encourage those celebrating the centennial of women’s right to vote to organize women to reach out to women and other marginalized individuals and help them overcome any barriers to voting.

If your teaching schedule includes November 3rd, consider postponing or cancelling class.

And of course,vote!
